The present standing and popularity of pastel in the UK owes much to the London-based Pastel Society and the direction and enthusiasm of its different presidents over the years, as well as its members. John became a member in 1969 and was President in 1981–3 and again in 1988–93. Throughout this period he was as passionate about revitalizing attitudes to pastel as he was about his approach to watercolour, putting an immense amount of effort into publicizing the medium as exciting and experimental. When John joined the society, the exhibitions lacked vibrancy and the subject matter was very traditional. He set about changing this and one of his first moves was to persuade the council to agree to put members’ work through a selection committee. This ruffled a few feathers but the society thrived following this decision and continues to display exciting, contemporary exhibitions today.
